   Though its basic principles harked back to ancient times, the American Revolution truly was a “shot heard round the world,” resonating from the village greens of Lexington and Concord to the streets of Paris and back again. 250 years later, despite repeated challenges to its hegemony, American-style democracy continues to serve as a guiding light for governments around the world even as it struggles to prevail in its own homeland.
